2008 Honda CB 1000R XESS

The XESS (eXtreme European Streetfighter Styling) version of the CB1000R draws on the most extreme potential of this new Naked streetfighter’s intensely aggressive power. It focuses the customer’s attention on the eventual possibilities for modifying the production model to make it even more stunning.

The original CB1000R was intended to stimulate Honda Emotion; to be number one in the Sports-Naked category and the ultimate bike for two-wheel enthusiasts. This was achieved through its innovative and challenging design and through such impressive technology as the ex-Fireblade inline-4 engine, the long-and-low underslung exhaust and the hybrid aluminium swingarm. Incorporating impressive handling and a sporty nature, our plan for this model is to become the big Naked queen of the long and winding roads.

Our goal with the XESS is to allow CB1000R customers to shine out in the crowd (even more!) and give them really breathtaking added value. It is similar to our much-appreciated initiative with the Hornet 600 in early 2006. It’s clear that Naked customers like to customise their bikes, so we decided to sow the seeds of imagination with a reality model.

The XESS represents the most radical and extreme styling of the new Italian-designed CB1000R. Just as Honda represents “The Power of Dreams,” the CB1000R should be considered “The Model of Dreams” in the Naked category – a dream bike starting with a unique Honda basis and cutomised with the most impressively designed accessories.*

If the CB1000R is a spectacularly emotional bike, the velvet-red XESS builds even more on that emotion - aggressive as a panther and ready to holeshot with a premium motorcycle image. That’s why the tank is graced with the new Honda Wing emblem that only decorates top-end models like the RC212V, the Fireblade and the DN-01.

This impressive customization of a brand-new motorcycle model with quality custom parts is yet another unique and visionary initiative from Honda.

*The names of the after-market providers can be obtained on request from your local Honda sales company.

The XESS project was carried out by a local workgroup in Italy. Vito Cicchetti (General Manager, Honda Italy) proposed the initial concept and positioning, while Fausto Giancristofaro sought out suppliers of the most passionate parts and coordinated the realisation of the special model’s.

The many parts that have been added or changed include: a special Showa-signed and anodized massive front fork, Hanabira front discs with radial-mounted front callipers, a titanium twin-exhaust, lighter and race-ready footpegs, an aggressive red transmission chain, reversed levers, a velvet seat and several carbon fibre elements (such as the front mudguard, front light cowl, rear hugger, side covers and rear seat cowl).

The concept, drawings and development of the mass production model were established by R&D headquarters in Roma with the support of the Italian Sales Division. With its already sensational design, it provided an ideal basis from which to develop such an impressive and aggressive prototype. The result is a model that celebrates traditional Honda quality with 100% Italian design.

Harley Davidson 2008 VRSC Range

1250cc Revolution® V-Twin with Slipper Clutch on All Models, ABS Now an Option
The Harley-Davidson family of VRSC™ premium power cruisers will pack more muscle in 2008. Both VRSC models are powered by the 1250cc (previously 1130cc) Revolution® liquid-cooled V-Twin engine, a powertrain originally developed for the Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod and now tuned to crank out up to 123 horsepower and 85 ft.-lbs. of torque 91.7kW / 115Nm. To help harness this new-found power, a new slipper clutch is now featured which helps prevent rear wheel lock-up during rapid downshifts. And, for the first time, all VRSC models will be available with optional Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), subject to availability.

As the only Harley-Davidson platform powered by a liquid-cooled V-Twin engine, the VRSC family offers sleek, drag-bike styling and the performance of high-revving horsepower. A low seat height, stretched-out profile with 36-degree fork angle, wide rear tyre and 49mm forks, are characteristics of each VRSC model.

The advanced ABS system available as a factory-installed option on all VRSC models is designed to work in conjunction with the high-performance Brembo® disc brakes, providing light lever feedback during ABS events to alert the rider to unstable braking conditions. Unlike many motorcycle anti-lock systems, Harley-Davidson ABS is not a linked system, meaning the rider maintains full, independent control of both front and rear brakes. Great care has been taken in styling the new system so that it is barely visible. ABS-equipped bikes will be subject to availability as customer demand for this technology is gauged.

The VRSC family are power cruisers that share the performance and technology legacy of the Screamin’ Eagle® / Vance & Hines drag racing team, three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle World Champions.

NEW ON VRSC™ FOR 2008

1250cc Revolution® V-Twin: Originally designed for the CVO Screamin’ Eagle® V-Rod®, bore is increased to 105mm from 100mm, boosting displacement from 1130cc to 1250cc. This engine is tuned to produce up to 123 hp at 8250 rpm and up to 85 ft-lbs. of torque at 7000 91.7kW / 115Nm. The 60-degree Revolution V-Twin is liquid-cooled and features Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), twin overhead cams, four-valve heads, and a five-speed transmission. The engine is isolation-mounted in a hydroformed steel perimeter frame. A steel shell covers the large-volume airbox, which houses two huge velocity stacks for high performance. A 5-gallon/18.9 litre fuel tank is located below the seat on all VRSC models.

Slipper Clutch: Both 2008 VRSC models have a new clutch with race-bred “slipper” action that helps mitigate drivetrain strain and rear-wheel lock-up during downshifting. Integral with the new clutch design is an assist feature that reduces clutch-lever effort by more than 20 percent.

Optional ABS: For the first time, VRSC models are available with optional, factory-installed Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Designed to work in conjunction with the high-performance Brembo® brakes, this is the most advanced braking system offered on any power cruiser. ABS is designed to help the rider maintain control during braking events, especially those that happen in less-than-optimal conditions. The components of the Harley-Davidson ABS have been designed and packaged to be virtually invisible, preserving the uncluttered styling of the area around the wheels. Unlike many motorcycle ABS, Harley-Davidson ABS is not a linked system, meaning the rider maintains full, independent control of both front and rear brakes.

Harley Davidson 2008 Dyna Range

New Braided Brake Lines on all Dyna® Motorcycles plus a 105th Anniversary Edition version of the FXDC Dyna® Super Glide® Custom

The bold new FXDF Dyna® Fat Bob® dominates the 2008 line of Dyna factory custom motorcycles from Harley-Davidson. Unmistakable behind dual headlamps and rolling on chunky, aggressive tyres, the Fat Bob takes Dyna styling in an aggressive new direction. Other Dyna news for 2008 includes braided stainless steel brake lines as standard equipment on all models, and the availability of the FXDC Dyna® Super Glide® Custom model with a Limited Edition 105th Anniversary package of special paint, badges and serial-numbering.

Over the years, the Dyna line has established a reputation for great handling and exhilarating performance. The Fat Bob, named after the iconic fuel tank shape that has defined generations of Harley-Davidson factory customs, combines signature Dyna performance with a new profile that communicates cool street authority and presence.

Powered by a Twin Cam 96™ engine that pounds out 94 ft.-lbs. 127Nm of torque through a 6-speed Cruise Drive™ transmission, the Fat Bob’s black-and-polished alloy Twin Cam 96 (1584cc) powertrain breathes in through a distinctive new airbox cover and exhales through the wild new Tommy Gun exhaust system; a 2-1-2 configuration that snakes the rear pipe forward and around the engine timing cover to merge with the front pipe. The pipes then split and dump into staggered dual mufflers. A slotted exhaust shield gives the system its name.

But it’s the Fat Bob’s big 130mm front tyre spinning in beefy 49mm forks on a 16-inch by 3.5-inch slotted cast aluminium wheel that really leads the way. A new, aggressive tread design exaggerates the tyre’s chubby profile. Black painted fork lowers highlight the silver wheels and dual disc brakes, and match black risers holding a V-shaped drag bar. This is a front end that makes a bold statement.

All Dyna® models are powered by a 1584cc Twin Cam 96™ powertrain with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) mated to the 6-Speed Cruise Drive transmission and active intake and exhaust system. In the Dyna platform the Twin Cam 96 pounds out 91 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3125 rpm 123Nm. Shared Dyna characteristics include the side mounted battery box, exposed rear shock absorbers, and a classic Fat Bob® fuel tank with console.

New on Dyna for 2008:

Braided Brake Lines: Braided stainless steel brake lines enhance both the style and brake feel on all 2008 Dyna models.

105th Anniversary Edition: A limited-edition, serial-numbered 105th Anniversary version of the FXDC Dyna® Super Glide® Custom will be available in 2008

Harley Davidson FXCWC Rocker

The Rocker C is a chromed-out beauty. Almost every component that was powdercoated with attitude on the Rocker has been plated with dazzling chrome on the Rocker C, from the fork tubes to the headlamp to the V-Bar riser. On the Rocker C, the swingarm and the finned, cast-aluminum horseshoe oil tank are color-matched to the paint on the frame and bodywork. The Twin Cam 96B powertrain is finished in Black and Chrome. The tank and both fenders are treated to a flowing flamed pinstripe that contrasts with the base solid-color metallic paint and cloisonné tank medallions. Polished tapered five-spoke cast aluminum wheels are standard on the Rocker C.

Passenger pegs are a clue to a surprising feature of the Rocker C. The industry-first Trick solo seat completely conceals a passenger pillion and struts that deploy over the rear fender without tools. When someone needs a lift, simply lift off the main seat cushion and fold out the pillion on its chrome plated struts. The pillion is independent of the fender, which can still move through the full suspension range. For solo riding, the pillion stows away out of sight. The Rocker C is available in three solid colors with pinstripe flames: Vivid Black Deluxe, Pacific Blue Pearl Deluxe and Crimson Red Sunglo Deluxe.

ShowYo Moto: GSX-R1100 ‘Alien’ streetfighter

What do you do with an old 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100 that can no longer keep up with the latest litre-class superbikes from Japan and Italy? Take it to ShowYo Moto, who’ll readily convert it into a streetfighter – like the Manga-inspired ‘Alien’ you see here.

ShowYo Moto have been in the business of creating custom-built motorcycles since 2005. For this 1986 Gixxer, the idea was to create something that looked like it had just walked off the sets of a horror movie. Indeed. And a lot of hard work has gone into building the bike – the front and rear fenders and the headlamp unit alone took more than 50 hours of modeling! And talking about detailing, the front fender is made of nine different pieces, some made of stainless steel and the others made of lightweight composite materials…

If you're into the whole streetfighter thing, the Alien will probably appeal to you

While the headlamp unit, mini-fairing, radiator covers, belly pan and both fenders are custom made, the fuel tank comes from a 2006 Yamaha FZ1 and the tail unit if off an R6. The GSX-R1100 engine gets racing cams, a DynoJet Power Commander, K&N air filter, and custom made ShowYo Moto exhaust. Finally, the bike was painted by Extreme Graphic, in Canada.

Honda DN-01 price announced in Japan

Honda has announced the price of its new DN-01 automatic motorcycle - but only in Japan.

Over there, the innovative machine with its hydraulic drive system will cost 1,239,000 Yen, which translates to £6000.

While the official line from Honda is that the bike will cost between £8000 and £10,000 in the UK, the relatively low Japanese price suggests it will be nearer the bottom end of that scale.

The Japanese price puts the DN-01 between the firm's CBR600RR and CBR1000RR as far as cost is concerned, suggesting that in the UK, once import costs and taxes are taken into account, it's likely to be around £8000.

The 40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007 is Restyled After a Decade

(2007-12-29)
The 40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007 organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Inc. (JAMA) was another success, held at Makuhari Messe, Chiba of Japan from October 26 to November 11 that had 246 exhibitors and drew some 1.43 million visitors.

The 2007 version ran with the "Catch the News, Touch the Future" theme that boasted a restyled, comprehensive show, the first in a decade, that combined exhibits of passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, vehicle bodies, parts, and machinery.

The Tokyo Motor Show attracted intensive global attention for displaying many advanced products and technologies, including many world premieres in all automotive vehicle categories, which was given a dash of amusement with a broad lineup of entertainment events that emphasized audience participation and hands-on interaction.

JAMA pointed out that the total number of visitors came to 1,425,800, a minor decrease from the previous show (the 39th show in 2005), but nonetheless clipped the heels of the 1,431,900 figure for the 2006 Paris International Motor Show.

Top-level Premieres

The number of debuts at the Tokyo Motor Show continues to be among the top globally, the organizer claimed. This year there were 77 World Premieres (36 passenger cars, 5 commercial vehicles, 32 motorcycles, 4 vehicle bodies) and 103 Japanese Premieres (75 passenger cars, 2 commercial vehicles, 26 motorcycles). Visitors and the press alike were enthusiastic about models incorporating leading-edge environmental and safety technologies, and also about sporty models that focus on driving pleasure.

Being a biannual event, the next show is scheduled for the fall of 2009 at Makuhari Messe again and will maintain the same all-in-one format, with the specific schedule to be announced next spring.

Major Bike Brands Under One Roof

All the top-four Japanese players, including Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda, and some leading global brands such as Kymco, Ducati, Triumph, Harley-Davison and Adiva displayed their latest machines, while many of them are world premiers.

The Honda Motor Co., one of the world`s largest motorcycle makers, featured 10 World Premier models, three Japan Premier models, and other 33 exhibits, as well as Honda`s environmental and safety technologies.

Takeo Fukui, president and director of Honda, said in his speech for the global media, that Honda`s major theme for this year`s show is "Find Your Wings."

Honda`s EVO6 concept bike combines Honda`s original horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine and sophisticated design to create a new category in the market. The all-new Forza Z scooter is another World Premier. Other highlights are the CB1100F and CB1100R concept models equipped with Honda`s traditional yet continually-maturing inline four-cylinder engines-a new motorcycle idea for the next generation.

Other exhibits included the leading motorcycle maker`s line-up of advanced environmental and safety technologies and Honda`s motor sports racers.

"For our latest efforts in environmental technologies, we have made the fuel injection system even more lightweight and compact to expand its application to small motorcycles as well as large models," Fukui said. "We will also incorporate such new technologies as the `Ultra-low friction engine` to further improve Honda`s fuel economy."

Fukui introduced one of Honda`s new technologies on display, the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system-which enables optimized control of the number of operating cylinders, switching between two, three, or four cylinders according to riding conditions. According to the president, Honda is conducting intensive R&D to apply this VCM system to large motorcycles to improve fuel economy by 30%.

Honda`s Goldwing features the world`s first airbag system for mass-produced motorcycles, and Fukui claimed that his company plans to apply this airbag technology to an increasing number of models.

Having Fun Is Also Good for Business

Honda is also paying more attention to meeting the universal demand for riding motorbikes for amusement-trying to focus more on so-called fun technologies. According to Fukui, looking at the Japanese marketplace, among others, shows that more and more people are riding motorcycles for leisure, especially the baby boomers who now can afford to lead relatively affluent lifestyles. In the mature markets of the developed countries in Europe and North America, the demand for leisure-oriented fun models with a focus on touring has been on the rise.

Responding to the trend, Honda recently launched the new automatic transmission system for motorcycles dubbed the Human-Friendly Transmission (HFT) system, which offers an exhilarating experience with a direct-feel as well as easy operation. The HFT was installed on the DN-01 shown at this year`s show, as well as on the new Forza and EV06 concept models. "We aim to develop technologies like these to reinvigorate the market by pursuing the fun element," Fukui stressed.

The DN01 with Honda`s advanced HFT technology.

Furthermore, the president added, Honda would continue exploring a wide range of possibilities in design technologies to respond to the diverse demands, offering pioneering, trend-setting models.

KYMCO, the Lone Taiwanese Brand

Kwang Yang Motor Co., Ltd. (KYMCO), the largest manufacturer of powered two-wheelers (PTWs) and all terrain vehicles (ATVs) in Taiwan, once again wanted to prove that it can keep up with the Big Leaguers by premiering several models at the show.

KYMCO is the only Taiwanese motorcycle company, and one of the only five international brands outside Japan to qualify against strict standards set by the organizer to be on the same stage as the top-four Japanese motorcycle brands. The other four famous foreign brands are Harley-Davison of the U.S., Triumph of the U.K., and Ducati and Adiva of Italy.

KYMCO debuted the Myroad 700i, a 700cc electronic fuel-injection (EFI) high-end scooter, one with the biggest engine ever produced by a Taiwan powered two-wheeler (PTW) company. In addition, the company also unveiled the MXU-400, its latest 400cc ATV, which has been developed in response to significant demand generated worldwide by earlier 250cc and 500cc models, predecessors to the new MXU-400.

The batch of impressive PTWs debuted by KYMCO also included the Super-8 high-end sport 125cc scooter and Quannon 125cc street bike.

The Myroad 700i is KYMCO`s brand-new flagship scooter featuring all the best in styling, engine performance, and equipment. Jim Yang, marketing director of KYMCO`s overseas sales division, claimed that the firm has spent three years on developing the advanced 700cc liquid-cooled EFI engine as well as many other sophisticated equipment, such as the electrically-adjustable rear suspension that is rider-adjustable to suit different road conditions, or the automatic ABS for excellent braking safety.

KYMCO developed the high-end touring scooter by focusing on several design criteria, including technology, luxury, comfort, styling, and safety. With a powerful 700cc EFI high-tech engine, the Myroad is capable of cruising alongside big bikes on long trips, as well as afford elegant styling, comfy seating; while the anti-theft system, anti-lock brake system (ABS), tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), etc. round out its lengthy list of standard equipment, requisite on any large-displacement scooter targeted at upmarket consumers.

According to KYMCO, the design of the latest MXU 400 ATV integrates robust, classic American styling cues with the practicality and functionality of modern sport and recreational ATVs, or in short, toughness and style in one.

The MXU 400 fully complies with all European standards and meets the high expectations from the increasingly sophisticated global ATV market. KYMCO claimed that the MXU 400 has design features incorporating subtle yet instantly-recognizable cues of classic design: ribbed hood lines, characteristic wheel arch flairs, and ultra- modern diamond-style headlights, just some of the key features making the new ATV a unique concept.

"The new Myroad 700i is the culmination of KYMCO`s strong technical, R&D, and quality capabilities, as well as a milestone in Taiwan`s PTW industry," Yang claimed. "We hope this trend-setting scooter can help raise KYMCO`s brand image globally."

Yamaha Shows Works of Art

The Yamaha booth concept for the 40th Tokyo Motor Show was "The Art of Engineering." Going beyond mere avant garde, the booth aimed to express the true essence of Yamaha by modeling the entire booth as a "Yamaha Museum" and displaying the bikes as works of art.

Takashi Kajikawa, president of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., said during his speech to the global media that the world`s motorcycle market is growing steadily, led by the Asian markets. "For 2007, demand is gaining momentum and approaching 46 million units," Kajikawa stated. "I believe that motorcycles are vehicles of great social value, not only for the mobility they offer but also for being energy and space efficient models of transportation. These unique values have turned motorcycles into indispensable tools for the lives of countless people in growing markets in Asia and Latin America. So I believe that we can expect to see continued growth in demand in the future."

In contrast, the president added, larger displacement motorcycles continue to be popular primarily for leisure riding in markets like Japan, Europe, and North America. This demand can be accredited to the most fundamental appeal of motorcycles as literally vehicles to freedom-offering wind-in-the-hair exhilaration and indulgence. As leisure vehicles, models and services with constantly higher level of added-value are in demand.

Yamaha`s booth demonstrated its conceptual art behind Yamaha motorcycle design and engineering by showcasing the company`s definitive design ideal of "GENESIS," the engineering ideal that sees the engine, chassis and other main components of a motorcycle not as individual mechanisms but as an integral whole; the active adoption of the latest electronic control technologies to achieve enhanced levels of "rider-machine communication" based on human perception; and "Smart Power" that achieves both customer excitement and eco-friendliness with new power sources.

A total of nine World-Premiere models were unveiled by Yamaha, including the "WR250X Special" dirt bike with the first magnesium rear frame ever on a production model and other advanced technologies; the stylish "BW`S Concept" scooter with off-road flavor; the "XT660Z" Tenere which is eponymous with the famous Dakar Rally machine; the "XS-V1 Sakura" classic-style motorcycle which symbolizes Yamaha Motor`s corporate philosophy; and the "RAIDER S" touring bike that awe-inspires.

Yamaha also displayed the "TMAX" (Japan Premiere) and "MAJESTY Special" (World Premiere) as its proud entries in the automatic transmission bike category.

The hybrid "LUXAIR".

Underlining its dedication to "Smart Power," Yamaha showcased several bikes featuring innovative technologies, including the crossbred four-wheeled hybrid "Tesseract" powered by a liquid-cooled V-twin engine and an electric motor; the compact electric commuter models "BOBBY" and "C3+"; the fuel-cell motorcycles "FC-AQEL" that runs on compressed hydrogen fuel and the "FC-Dii" that runs on methanol, as well as the hybrid "LUXAIR" driven by a gasoline engine and electric motor.

The four-wheeled hybrid "Tesseract" is powered by a liquid-cooled V-twin engine and an electric motor.

Suzuki "Flies" The Biplane

Suzuki Motor Corp. also showcased many cutting-edge World Premiere models.

One of the most radical machines was the concept "The Biplane," which communicates the joy of two-wheeled mobility through a design that was uniquely inspired by the feeling of piloting an airplane. The Biplane, which has no canopy, gives a great feeling of openness thanks to its name-implied shape, which always evokes softer, human-friendliness and warmth, Suzuki said, with the bike being powered by a V4 engine.

Suzuki`s idea of a new way for adult couples to ride side-by-side in the city is the Gemma, which has an innovative bench seat, as well as refined, low, flowing form. A bench seat allows couples to ride with a greater sense of togetherness. It also features a front luggage compartment that enhances the stylish riding experience. The city-smart, compact Gemma is designed for new riding enjoyment that is couple-friendly and yet different from cars or conventional scooters.

The "Crosscage" is a fuel-cell concept motorcycle featuring a simple, compact, lightweight air-cooled fuel-cell system and a high-performance secondary battery to realize optimal power control. The fuel-cell unit from the British specialist company Intelligent Energy delivers quick activation with low fuel consumption, Suzuki said, and a lithium-ion battery combines safety with a low environmental burden. Besides being environment-friendly, the Crosscage also helped to confirm sporty styling befitting the Suzuki name.

The first Hayabusa 1300 introduced the ultimate sport motorcycle performance concept back in 1999. Now the motorcycle named after the world`s fastest bird is ready to soar to new heights with a full model change. Notably, Suzuki worked with the "one piece" concept to regard the rider as part of the bike`s aerodynamic structure, taking the rider`s position into careful account to minimize the drag coefficient. Suzuki also upped the engine displacement to create a bike that looks and performs like nothing else on two wheels.

The Skywave Type M is a big scooter featuring 7-speed manual transmission that is an electronically-controlled CVT, while Skywave`s smooth ride is enabled by its link-type suspension with high shock-absorption performance. Its electronically-controlled CVT (SECVT), which comes with MT assist for better acceleration, opens up a new realm of riding quality combining superb comfort and sporty performance.

Honda Launches The New DN-01 Large Sports Cruiser With Innovative Automatic HFT

Honda Motor, Co., Ltd. announced that sales of the DN-01 large sports cruiser will begin in Japan on Friday, March 7. The unique, low-styling body features a liquid-cooled four-stroke 680 cc OHC V-twin engine that resonates power and a new automatic transmission, the Human-Friendly Transmission (HFT), that delivers superior throttle response for comfort even on long rides, and simple operation with no need for clutch use, allowing sporty riding.

Featuring Honda’s innovative lockup-equipped, infinitely variable hydraulic mechanical transmission—the HFT delivers superb throttle response and a direct drive feel—the DN-01 is the result of thoroughly pursuing a style that is both luxurious and relaxing, easy and individualistic. The remarkable transmission makes the DN-01 easy to operate, while providing the sporty ride quality that is an intrinsic part of motorcycles. In short, the DN-01 offers totally new sensations in sports riding unheard of in conventional sports models. The relatively low 690 mm seat height offers a relaxedriding position, along with a comfortable passenger seat. Ownership satisfaction comes from the elegant styling and the overall high-quality fit and finish. The DN-01 is a sports cruiser with new value aimed at the discriminating adult rider.

The DN-01 takes its name from the phrase "Discovery of a New Concept," after Honda’s desire to develop a new concept motorcycle. Since its exhibition as a concept model at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show in 2005, Honda has been working toward the market launch of the DN-01, efforts that resulted in the machine being exhibited at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show in 2007 as a model scheduled for release. The DN-01 was developed as a large sports cruiser materializing a new concept, equipped with distinctive HFT, which is based on the automatic transmission in the 1962 Juno M85 and features characteristics optimal for a production machine, thanks to continuous development and advances in electronic control technology.

Key Features
Powertrain

The liquid-cooled four-stroke 680 cc OHC V-twin engine featured in the DN-01 demonstrates powerful and flat torque characteristics in the low-rpm range as well as high-rpm range, realizing smooth and easy revving. A superb fit with the new HFT realizes a comfortable ride feel. A single-sided swingarm (Pro-Arm), acknowledged in the Goldwing and VFR, and a maintenance-free shaft drive with superior durability and quietness have been adopted for the drivetrain. The DN-01 design also takes vibration resistance into account with a full rubber mount for the engine. For environmental performance, the DN-01 conforms with the 2007 exhaust emissions standards in Japan with an electronic fuel injection system (PGM-FI) and a catalyst device (catalyzer).

Automatic Transmission
An infinitely variable hydraulic mechanical transmission, the HFT realizes the lightweight and compact configuration required for motorcycles. Compared with the V-belt automatic transmission used on scooters, this automatic transmission unit can be stored within the engine crankcase, increasing the level of design freedom in the body layout. The HFT responds to a wide variety of rider demands, from easy-to-operate, comfortable riding to sporty and nimble ride quality with a direct response to accelerator operation, due to the hydraulics and computer control. In addition to two fully automatic shifting modes—D mode to cover ordinary riding and S mode for a sportier riding experience—the HFT features a six-speed manual mode, which allows riding with a manual transmission feel. Moreover, the HFT equips the world’s first lockup mechanism for an infinitely variable hydraulic mechanical transmission, contributing to improved fuel economy during cruising.

Design
From the "Low & Long + Modern Organic Body" design concept comes a truly individualistic style. The long-nosed front cowl incorporates dual projector headlights with overall front face shaped in sharp image. The integrated muffler bringing about a sense of unity with the under-cowl, and the Pro-Arm swingarm supporting the rear wheel on one side to give the rear a simple look, as well as the ten-spoke 17-inch wheels, accent the machine’s functional beauty and unique sense of style. The instrument panel design combines luxurious LCD and white LED to simultaneously improve visibility and significantly enhance owner satisfaction.

Brake System
The Combined ABS, which is a combination of the Combined Brake System and the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), is equipped on the DN-01, delivering powerful and dependable braking performance.

The three-pot calipers of the front brake provides strong braking control, while rear brake is equipped as a foot pedal type bringing a sense of motorcycle feel. And with such features as a parking brake for convenient parking on hilly roads, the DN-01 provides a full range of functionality for a feeling of security.

Body
Centralization of mass and a lower center of gravity, together with an ideal front and rear weight distribution, ensure responsive handling even with the long 1,610 mm wheelbase. Large foot step boards that can be repositioned to meet rider preferences and a low 690 mm seat height make for a spacious and comfortable riding position, giving the rider the most freedom of movement as possible. At the same time, taking tandem riding into consideration, there is also plenty of room for a passenger on the wide and long seating area. Moreover, passenger and rider seats are close in distance to enjoy a conversation, and well-though layout provides wide-open forward visibility. As rider is, the passenger seat is also designed to deliver unity with the machine and feel the exhilaration of riding.

Body Color
To suit DN-01’s unique styling, the four colors of variations are set, exhibiting a sense of luxury and complete satisfaction for its ownership: Pearl Sunbeam White, Pearl Amethyst Purple, Candy Glory Red and Graphite Black.

Other
The DN-01 features the Honda Ignition Security System (H.I.S.S.), Honda’s unique anti-theft system using an electronic interlock. The device is programmed to start the engine when the IC chip built into the original key and the ID in the ECU of motorcycle matches. Otherwise, the system prevents the engine from being started, providing effective protection.

Furthermore, an original system has been established for the DN-01 to provide a higher quality service. This new system functions with DN-01 dealer information network to manage the service history of the customer’s machine. To reference authentication data of the machine from the network, the information is stored on a RF-ID which is built into the main key of its machine called, Honda Motorcycle Data (HMD) key. By showing this HMD key to the DN-01 dealer, the machine’s service history and information are available instantly through this system, allowing Honda to provide even higher level of service that will also lead to a higher customer satisfaction.
